Who is it for?

Piano and flute students who are progressing steadily and would like to mark that progress with an internationally recognised qualification. There is no age limit for LCM exams.

For some students an exam gives shape to their weekly practice; for others it is a tangible reward for their work. Either way, we decide together when to enter, based on how ready and willing your child is.

What do lessons cover?

  • Choosing the level: we pick the right level for your child together. LCM exams follow a graded structure, from introductory Steps up to advanced Grades, and each student starts at the level that suits them.
  • Pieces: we choose works from the exam lists that suit the student’s character and bring them to performance standard.
  • Technical work: scales, arpeggios and exercises on a steady schedule.
  • Sight-reading and aural tests: short, regular practice so these sections hold no surprises.
  • Discussion: preparing for questions about the pieces performed and basic musical knowledge.
  • Mock exams: run-throughs that recreate real exam conditions.

How do we progress?

Exam preparation does not replace lessons; it gathers them around a goal. While working on exam pieces, a student’s wider musical development carries on, with time for pieces outside the syllabus and for concert preparation too. The report that follows each exam, with marks for every section and the examiner’s comments, helps us plan the next term together.

We plan backwards from the exam date. First the pieces settle, then technique and the supporting tests grow stronger, and in the final weeks full mock exams build confidence.

LCM exams can be taken in person or digitally, for example by video recording. We will help you decide which option suits your child. The Distinction and Merit results our students have achieved are the fruit of balanced, patient preparation.

  • What are LCM exams?

    London College of Music Examinations (LCME) is a British music exam board, part of the University of West London, that has been running exams since 1887. Its graded exams lead to internationally recognised qualifications regulated by Ofqual in the UK. Students progress step by step from Step 1 to Grade 8, and each exam is awarded a Pass, Merit or Distinction.

  • Where and how are the exams taken?

    LCM exams can be taken in person or digitally; for a digital exam, a video recording of the programme is submitted. Since sessions, centres and entry arrangements can change, we share the current options with you when entries open. Our students’ winter 2023 certificates came from digital exams.

    A sound that starts with the breath and grows more beautiful with patience. In one-to-one flute lessons we build a secure foundation, from breathing and embouchure to a clear tone, reading and playing with piano accompaniment, with the stage and exams along the way.
